Halloween Telephone Game Printable: Spooky Phrase Cards

A Whisper Game That Gets Funnier With Every Pass

Some party games need props, prizes, and a lot of setup. This one needs a circle of people and a willingness to whisper badly. The Halloween telephone game takes the classic whisper chain you probably played as a kid and gives it a spooky twist, and the best part is watching a perfectly normal sentence turn into something completely wild by the time it reaches the last person.

It works for almost any group. Kids love the silly results, and adults are honestly just as bad at whispering as kids are. You can play it in a living room, a classroom, or a backyard, and fit a round in between pumpkin carving and handing out candy.

Below you’ll find 30 ready-to-use phrase cards, split into easy and tricky sets, plus simple rules, a reveal-scoring sheet, and a few fun twists. Print the cards, cut them out, and you’re ready to play.

What You Need

Keep it simple. You’ll need the printed phrase cards below, scissors to cut them apart, and enough chairs or floor space for everyone to sit in a circle. A small basket for the cards is handy, and a pen helps if you want to use the reveal-scoring sheet. No timer is required, though a phone timer can add a little pressure if your group likes that.

For groups of six or more, the game really shines. With fewer players, the funny mutations are smaller. With ten or more, expect total chaos in the best possible way. For a big party, split into two circles and compare final phrases at the end.

Printable Phrase Cards: Easy Set

Start with these if kids are playing, or if it’s your group’s first round. They’re short, clear, and just tricky enough to go wrong in funny ways.

Easy Cards (1-15):
1. The ghost lost his sheet in the washing machine
2. The black cat sat on the pumpkin pie
3. Five little bats flew over the haunted house
4. The witch stirred her soup with a broom
5. A skeleton danced in the moonlight
6. The pumpkin rolled down the spooky hill
7. Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat
8. The vampire forgot to brush his fangs
9. A friendly ghost hid behind the curtain
10. The mummy wrapped himself in toilet paper
11. Three witches baked cookies at midnight
12. The spider spun a web in the attic
13. A zombie shuffled past the candy bowl
14. The haunted house creaked in the wind
15. The jack-o-lantern grinned at the trick-or-treaters

Printable Phrase Cards: Tricky Set

Save these for older kids, teens, and adults, or for a second round once everyone is warmed up. Longer sentences, similar-sounding words, and a few tongue-twisters make these much harder to pass along cleanly.

Tricky Cards (16-30):
16. The cranky crow cackled as the creepy castle clock chimed thirteen
17. Sally’s spooky spaghetti slipped off the skeleton’s slippery plate
18. The werewolf wore a woolly sweater to the witches’ wobbly dance
19. Six skeletons sipped six spooky smoothies in the cellar
20. The ghost host boasted about the most haunted house on Hollow Lane
21. A plump pumpkin plummeted past the picket fence and into the pond
22. The mischievous mummy mumbled a muddled message to the monster
23. Wanda the witch whispered a wicked wish while washing her warty wart
24. The bats, cats, and rats all rattled the rafters at midnight
25. Freddy Frankenstein fried frighteningly crispy fries for the freaky feast
26. The goblin gobbled a gigantic gumball and giggled all night long
27. A jittery jack-o-lantern juggled jellybeans in the junkyard
28. The phantom pianist played a peculiar tune on the purple piano
29. Ten trembling trick-or-treaters tiptoed through the tangled thorn bushes
30. The sleepy skeleton slept soundly in the spooky, squeaky shed

How to Play

Have everyone sit in a circle. Pick one person to start. That person draws a card, reads it silently, and whispers it once into the next person’s ear. No repeating, no spelling things out, and no showing the card. That’s the whole secret: one whisper, passed along, mistakes and all.

Each player whispers exactly what they heard, even if it sounds wrong. Guessing is part of the fun, and trying to fix a phrase usually makes it stranger. The last person says the phrase out loud, then the first person reads the original card aloud, and the group enjoys how far the message wandered.

After each round, the starter moves one seat along so everyone gets a turn. Mix easy and tricky cards to suit the group. If a phrase comes back unchanged, celebrate it — it’s rarer than you’d think once the giggles start.

Reveal Scoring Sheet

If your group likes friendly competition, keep score as you reveal each phrase. Give the circle a point for every round where the final phrase matches the original exactly, and a bonus point for the funniest final phrase of the night, voted on by the group.

Reveal Scoring Sheet:
Round 1: Original phrase / Final phrase / Match? / Funniest moment?
Round 2: Original phrase / Final phrase / Match? / Funniest moment?
Round 3: Original phrase / Final phrase / Match? / Funniest moment?
Round 4: Original phrase / Final phrase / Match? / Funniest moment?
Round 5: Original phrase / Final phrase / Match? / Funniest moment?
Bonus point: Funniest final phrase of the night

Keep the scoring light. The real prize is the story you’ll retell later, like the night “the ghost lost his sheet” somehow became “the goat lost his sheep in the washing machine.”

Ways to Change It Up

Once you’ve played a few straight rounds, try the drawing variant, often called telephone pictionary. The first person writes a phrase, the next person draws it, the next writes what they think the drawing shows, and so on, alternating words and pictures around the circle. The reveal at the end is usually hilarious, and it works brilliantly with the tricky cards.

For a classroom variant, keep phrases short and let the teacher start each round. Play in small circles of six to eight students, and use the reveal as a listening exercise: ask what word changed first and why. It’s sneaky listening practice wrapped in a game.

Other twists are easy to add. Try a speed round where each whisper has to happen within five seconds, a theme round built around one character like a witch or a ghost, or, for a grown-up party, let players invent their own spooky phrases for the basket. Just keep phrases kind and party-friendly.
