Christmas Word Search Printable: A Festive Puzzle for Kids and Families
Word searches are the perfect quiet game for the holidays: one page, one pencil, and a satisfying hunt for hidden words. They work for early readers and grown-ups alike, they travel well in a car or a classroom, and they make a calm, screen-free activity for Christmas morning while everyone waits for the rest of the family to wake up.
Below is a complete printable-style Christmas word search: the word list, the puzzle grid, and tips for making easier and harder versions, plus an answer note for the host.
How to Play
Find each word from the list hidden in the grid. Words run across, down, and diagonally — but never backwards in this version, which keeps it fair for younger players. Circle or highlight each word as you find it, and cross it off the list. The first player to find all 12 words wins, or play cooperatively and work through the grid together as a family.
For young kids, start with the shortest words: ELF, SNOW, BELL, and SLED are good first finds. For older players, hunt the long words first — WREATH and HOLLY are easier to spot once you know their starting letters.

Answer Note for the Host
All 12 words are hidden in the grid above, running across, down, or diagonally. A few to get you started if a player gets stuck: STAR sits across the fourth row, CAROL sits across the ninth row, and ELF and SLED both appear in the lower rows. Cover this section when printing for players, and keep it handy for quick checks.
Word Search Strategy Tips
A few habits make word searches much more satisfying. Scan row by row instead of jumping around the grid, and look for unusual letters first — a Q, X, or Z narrows the hunt fast, and in this puzzle the letter W appears in WREATH and SNOW, so it is a good anchor. Work through the word list in order and cross off each word the moment you find it, so you never re-hunt a word you already found. If you get stuck, switch direction: look down the columns instead of across the rows, since a fresh angle often reveals a word that was hiding in plain sight. And if a word still will not appear, take a break and come back — fresh eyes find hidden words faster than tired ones.
Make Easier and Harder Versions
Easier (Ages 5–7)
Use a smaller grid with just six short words — SANTA, TREE, STAR, GIFT, SNOW, ELF — and place them only across and down. Big letters help: print the grid in a large font so young eyes can scan comfortably.
Harder (Ages 10 and Up)
Add backwards and diagonal words, grow the grid, and add longer words like GINGERBREAD, NUTCRACKER, POINSETTIA, and MISTLETOE. Time the challenge and award bonus points for finding the longest word first.
Classroom Version
Print one grid per student and let early finishers race to complete it. For a literacy twist, ask students to write a sentence using three of the words they found. For a party version, print the grid large and solve it together on a whiteboard, with teams taking turns calling out a word.
More Puzzle Ideas for the Season
If your group loves this puzzle, follow it with a Christmas crossword, a word scramble using the same word list, or a second word search with a winter theme — SNOWFLAKE, BLIZZARD, ICICLE, MITTENS, and FIREPLACE make a great cold-weather set. Rotating puzzle types keeps the table fresh all December.
