Pop Goes the Pumpkin Balloon Pop Game Printable: Build Guide & Prizes
There’s a special kind of joy in popping a balloon, and Pop Goes the Pumpkin turns it into a full Halloween event. You build a giant pumpkin out of orange balloons on a board, hide prizes inside, and let guests pop their way through it. Kids go feral for it, adults pretend they’re too cool and then fight over the last balloon. Below is the complete free setup — materials list, step-by-step build, printable prize tickets, three ways to play, and the safety notes that keep it fun instead of chaotic.

What You’ll Need (Printable Shopping List)
- 25–40 orange balloons (12-inch, standard — the cheap thin ones pop too easily and frustrate kids)
- 1 green balloon for the stem (optional but it sells the pumpkin look)
- A large foam board or cardboard panel, roughly 4×3 feet
- Push pins, tacks, or double-sided mounting tape to attach balloons
- Small prizes: wrapped candy, stickers, temporary tattoos, glow bracelets, mini toys
- Printed prize tickets (the free list below — cut into slips)
- A push pin or plastic dart per player for popping (tied to a ribbon so it doesn’t get lost)
- Black marker for drawing jack-o’-lantern faces on a few balloons
- A broom and dustpan nearby — trust me on this one
Build the Pumpkin Board (20 Minutes)
Step 1 — Stuff the prizes. Before inflating, drop one small prize or one printed prize ticket into each balloon. Vary the good stuff — a few “grand prize” tickets, plenty of candy tickets, and a couple of funny joke tickets so not every pop is treasure.
Step 2 — Inflate. Blow up the balloons to roughly the same size. Under-inflated balloons are harder to pop and frustrate little kids; aim for firm but not drum-tight.
Step 3 — Attach to the board. Lay the board flat and arrange the balloons in a pumpkin shape: a wide round cluster with a slightly narrower top, then the green balloon as the stem. Pin or tape each balloon’s knot to the board. Work from the bottom row up so the weight holds.
Step 4 — Face it (optional). Draw jack-o’-lantern faces on 5–6 balloons with the black marker. It photographs beautifully and makes the board look finished.
Step 5 — Mount it. Lean the board against a wall at a slight angle or hang it with strong tape. Put a small rug or sheet underneath to catch balloon bits and candy. Set a “pop line” on the floor with tape, about 6 feet back.

Three Ways to Play
1. Classic: one pop per turn
Each player steps to the pop line, gets one pop, and keeps whatever ticket falls out. Simple, fair, and it stretches the game so everyone gets a turn. Best for big groups and young kids.
2. Points race
Assign points: candy tickets = 1 point, prize tickets = 2, grand prize = 5, joke cards = 0 but maximum bragging rights. After all balloons are popped, highest score wins a bonus prize. Best for competitive tweens and teens.
3. Dare pop
Mix in 5–6 “dare tickets” among the prize tickets. Pop a dare ticket and you must do the dare before your next turn — sing a Halloween song, do a zombie walk, tell a two-sentence scary story. Best for adults who claim they’re “just watching.”
Safety Notes (Read Before the Party)
Balloon pops are loud — warn guests with noise sensitivity and keep babies and pets in another room during the game. Use a push pin on a ribbon, never a sharp dart, when kids under 10 are playing; an adult should handle the popping tool for the littlest ones. Pick up balloon fragments immediately — they’re a choking hazard for toddlers and pets. And inflate the balloons the day of the party, not the night before: day-old balloons get soft and refuse to pop, which is the saddest party failure I know.
Printable: Host’s Quick Rules Card
Pop line: Stand behind the tape. No leaning in.
One pop per turn unless the host calls a bonus round.
Keep your ticket — lost tickets can’t be re-awarded.
Fragments go in the bin, not on the floor.
Grand prize winners announce it loud so everyone can cheer (and be jealous).
