Halloween Escape Room Printable: 6 Free Puzzles to Play Tonight
There’s a special kind of chaos that only happens when a room full of kids is hunting for clues, shouting out guesses, and racing the clock. That’s what a printable Halloween escape room does for a party — it turns your living room into a haunted manor, and the kids eat it up.
I’ve run this exact game at three parties now, and here’s the honest truth: you don’t need locks, apps, or fancy props. You need a printer, a timer, and six puzzles. The kids do the rest. Below is the whole game — the story, all six puzzles, and the answer key at the end — written out so you can print this page and play tonight.
The Story: The Locked Pumpkin Patch
Read this part out loud when the game starts. Ham it up — the drama is half the fun.
It’s 11:15 on Halloween night. You and your friends snuck into the old pumpkin patch behind the Henderson farm to pick the biggest pumpkin before midnight. But the moment the last of you stepped past the fence, the gate swung shut and locked behind you. Tied to the gate is a note in wobbly handwriting:
“Good evening, pumpkin thieves. I am Grimelda, the witch of this patch. My gate is locked with six magic padlocks, and the key is hidden behind six puzzles. Solve them all before the clock strikes twelve, and you may go home. Fail, and you stay here forever… raking leaves.”
Each puzzle the players solve opens one lock. When all six locks are open, they escape. I set a 45-minute timer on my phone where everyone can hear it ticking — that timer does more work than I ever could.
How to Set Up in 10 Minutes
You really don’t need much. Here’s my whole setup list:
- This article, printed out — one copy of the puzzles per team, plus one copy of the answer key for the host (that’s you)
- A pen or pencil for each team
- Six envelopes (or just six folded sheets of paper) labeled Lock 1 through Lock 6
- A kitchen timer or your phone
Put Puzzle 1 in the Lock 1 envelope. When a team solves it, hand them Puzzle 2. Keep going until Puzzle 6, which leads to the final escape. Two to four kids per team works best. For a classroom, I’ve run it whole-class style with the teacher reading the clues.

The Six Puzzles
Lock 1: The Scrambled Spell
Grimelda scrambled three words of her spell. Unscramble each one, then write down the FIRST letter of each answer. Those three letters, in order, spell the magic word that opens Lock 1.
- OOB → __________ (letter: ___)
- LWO → __________ (letter: ___)
- EZOO → __________ (letter: ___)
The magic word is: ___ ___ ___ — shout it out loud!
Lock 2: The Witch’s Riddle
Grimelda loves riddles. She left this one on the fence post:
“I have a face but no eyes, nose, or mouth. Once a year you carve me and set me out. What am I?”
Write your answer: ____________________
Now count the letters in your answer. That number opens Lock 2.
Lock 3: The Ghost Cipher
The ghosts left a secret message, but they wrote it in numbers. Each number stands for a letter: 1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C, all the way to 26 = Z. Decode it:
20 – 18 – 9 – 3 – 11 – 15 – 18 – 20 – 18 – 5 – 1 – 20
Decoded message: ______________________________
Lock 4: The Bat Count
Grimelda’s bats are hiding in the pumpkin patch. Count every bat:
🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
🦇🦇🦇🦇
🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
Total bats: _______. Multiply that number by 2. The result opens Lock 4.
Lock 5: The Pumpkin Pattern
The pumpkins on the fence are arranged in a pattern. What comes next?
🎃 👻 🎃 🎃 👻 🎃 🎃 🎃 👻 🎃 🎃 🎃 ___
Next is: ________________ (pumpkin or ghost?)
Now count ALL the pumpkins in the row, including your answer. That number opens Lock 5.
Lock 6: The Final Escape
Five locks down, one to go. Behind the fifth lock is a small wooden box — but instead of a key, there’s a note:
“Clever children. But the last lock has no puzzle. It opens only when your whole team shouts all five lock answers together, in order, at the top of their lungs.”
Gather your team at the “gate” (your front door works great), count to three, and shout every answer. If the host confirms all five are right — YOU ESCAPE!

Answer Key (Host Only — Keep This Away From Players!)
- Lock 1: OOB → BOO (B), LWO → OWL (O), EZOO → OOZE (O). The magic word is BOO.
- Lock 2: The answer is PUMPKIN — 7 letters, so the code is 7.
- Lock 3: 20=T, 18=R, 9=I, 3=C, 11=K, 15=O, 18=R, 20=T, 18=R, 5=E, 1=A, 20=T → TRICKORTREAT.
- Lock 4: 5 + 4 + 6 = 15 bats. 15 × 2 = 30.
- Lock 5: The pattern adds one pumpkin each round (1, then 2, then 3, then 4 pumpkins between ghosts) — the last group shows three pumpkins, so next is a pumpkin to complete it. Total pumpkins: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10.
- Lock 6: The five answers in order: BOO – 7 – TRICKORTREAT – 30 – 10 (pumpkin next). When the team shouts them together, they win.
Host Tips That Actually Matter
Mix the ages on each team. A 7-year-old and an 11-year-old together is perfect — the older kid reads, the younger one counts bats. A team of only six-year-olds will stall at the cipher.
Don’t help for the first five minutes. They’ll flail, then someone will crack it, and then they’re off. If a team is truly stuck after ten minutes, hand them one hint: “try saying the numbers as letters.”
The timer is the whole game. Announce “ten minutes left” and “five minutes left” in your best witch voice. Grimelda voice optional but strongly encouraged.
