Halloween Pumpkin Seed Spitting Contest Printable: Rules, Heats & Results Sheet
Why a Pumpkin Seed Spitting Contest Steals the Show
I’ll be honest: the first time I ran a pumpkin seed spitting contest at a backyard Halloween party, I expected it to be a five-minute joke. It turned into the main event. Adults who had been politely standing around with cider suddenly lined up behind a strip of masking tape on the lawn, trash-talking each other like it was the finals of something that mattered. Kids begged for a second heat. Someone’s grandpa won the whole thing with a technique he swore he learned at a county fair decades ago.
That’s the charm of this game. It costs almost nothing, it works for mixed ages, and it turns a pile of pumpkin guts — the stuff you’d throw away anyway — into a real competition. All you need are roasted or cleaned pumpkin seeds, a tape measure, some tape or chalk for a start line, and the printable rules and results sheet below. Print it, clip it to a clipboard, and you’re the official contest judge.
What You Need
Save the seeds when you carve your pumpkins. Rinse them, pat them dry, and set aside at least 30 seeds per player so nobody runs out mid-heat. You’ll also want a long tape measure (25 feet is plenty), masking tape or sidewalk chalk for the start line, small flags or cones to mark distances, and a prize for the champion — a small bag of candy or a goofy trophy works perfectly. A bucket of water and paper towels nearby keeps hands clean between rounds.
One thing I learned the hard way: pick your seeds carefully. Use whole, firm seeds. Cracked or soggy seeds fly nowhere, and that’s no fun for anyone. Dry seeds travel farther, so let them air-dry for an hour before the contest if you can.

The Rules (Print This Part)
Setup
Mark a start line on flat ground with tape or chalk. Place a measuring tape on the ground running straight out from the line, or station a helper with the tape at the landing spot. Each player stands behind the line with toes behind it — no stepping over, no running start.
How Each Turn Works
Each player gets three spits per turn. They place one seed in their mouth, take aim, and spit. The judge marks where each seed lands and records only the longest of the three. Seeds that roll after landing count from where they stop, so pick a calm spot — wind is the real opponent here. If a seed lands outside the marked lane, that spit doesn’t count, but the player still has their remaining spits.
Heats and the Final
With up to 12 players, run two heats of six. The top two distances from each heat advance to the final round, where each finalist gets three fresh spits. The longest single spit in the final wins. With more than 12 players, add a third heat and take the top two from each. Ties get a one-spit tiebreaker, sudden death style, until someone pulls ahead.

Hygiene and Safety Notes
This game is outdoors only — no exceptions. Spitting indoors is a mess and a hygiene problem, so keep the whole contest on the lawn, driveway, or patio. Each person spits only their own seeds, from their own small cup. Nobody shares seeds, nobody picks up someone else’s seed, and seeds are never reused or eaten after they’ve been spat. Hand out a fresh cup of seeds per player and toss the leftovers when the contest ends. If a younger kid wants to play, give them a shorter practice round first so they get the idea without the pressure of the heats.
Keep the landing zone clear of other guests, and mark it with cones so nobody wanders into the line of fire mid-spit. It’s funny until someone gets a seed in their hair, so a little boundary goes a long way.

Tips for a Better Contest
Run a practice round before the real heats so everyone learns the technique — a sharp puff from the front of the mouth beats a big lungful of air every time. Announce each distance out loud as you measure it; the crowd reaction is half the fun. And if the wind picks up, turn the lane so players spit with the wind at their backs, or pause and run the final later. Nobody wants a championship decided by a gust.
