Halloween Potion Making Station Printable (4 Fizzy Recipes + Labels)

Why a Potion Station Steals the Party

Out of every Halloween activity I’ve set up, the potion station gets the biggest crowd and the least effort from me. Kids love it because they get to mix things and watch them fizz. Adults love it because it looks amazing in photos. And I love it because the whole thing runs on stuff I already had in my kitchen — baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, and a few jars.

The trick is setting it up so guests can play without you hovering over them. That means clear labels, pre-measured ingredients, and recipes that actually work every single time. The three recipes below are the ones I use. They fizz, they bubble, they change color, and none of them involve anything you wouldn’t already find in a normal kitchen.

Safety First — Read This Before You Set Up

An adult should supervise the station at all times. Nothing at this station gets tasted unless it is clearly food-grade — that means the drink recipes use juice and soda, and the fizzing potions are for looking at, not drinking. Keep the vinegar and baking soda away from eyes, and skip glass containers for young kids. Plastic beakers, mason-style plastic cups, and old jam jars with the lids off work great and won’t shatter if they get knocked over.

If a child has sensitive skin, have them wear the plastic gloves from your station kit while they stir. And keep a roll of paper towels nearby, because spills are part of the fun — plan for them instead of fighting them.

What You Need for the Station

  • Baking soda (one big box covers a whole party)
  • White vinegar
  • Food coloring in green, purple, orange, and red
  • Clear plastic cups, beakers, or jars
  • Wooden stir sticks or plastic spoons
  • Dish soap (a drop makes the fizz last longer)
  • Glitter (optional, but it sells the magic)
  • Printed recipe cards and ingredient labels (below)
  • A plastic tablecloth — trust me on this one
Halloween potion making station ingredients and supplies

Recipe Card 1: Witch’s Brew Fizz

You need: 2 tablespoons baking soda, 1/4 cup vinegar, 3 drops green food coloring, 1 drop dish soap, a pinch of glitter.
Steps: 1. Put the baking soda in your cup. 2. Add the food coloring and glitter. 3. Pour in the vinegar slowly and watch it erupt. 4. Stir once with your stick and admire your brew.
What happens: The baking soda and vinegar react and release bubbles of gas, which is what makes the fizz climb out of the cup. The dish soap traps those bubbles so the foam lasts longer.

Recipe Card 2: Vampire’s Blood Potion

You need: 2 tablespoons baking soda, 1/4 cup vinegar, 4 drops red food coloring, 1 drop dish soap.
Steps: 1. Put the baking soda in your cup. 2. Add the red food coloring. 3. Pour in the vinegar and stir gently. 4. Hold the cup up to the light — it looks like something straight out of a castle lab.
Tip: Use a tall, narrow cup for this one. The foam climbs higher and it looks much more dramatic.

Recipe Card 3: Ghostly Glow Brew

You need: 2 tablespoons baking soda, 1/4 cup vinegar, 2 drops purple food coloring, 1 drop dish soap, a pinch of glitter.
Steps: 1. Put the baking soda in your cup. 2. Add the purple food coloring and glitter. 3. Pour in the vinegar slowly. 4. Stir and watch the purple foam swirl.
Tip: This one photographs beautifully. If your party runs into the evening, put a small battery candle behind the cups — the glow through the foam is the whole effect.

Recipe Card 4: Pumpkin Patch Punch (the One You Can Actually Drink)

You need: 1 cup apple juice, 1/2 cup lemon-lime soda, 2 drops orange food coloring, ice, a plastic cup.
Steps: 1. Pour the apple juice into your cup. 2. Add the orange food coloring and stir. 3. Top it off with soda and ice. 4. Drink it — this is the only recipe at the station meant for tasting, and it’s just juice and soda.
Tip: Keep this recipe on a separate, clearly marked “DRINKABLE” card so nobody mixes it up with the fizzing potions.

Ingredient Label Ideas

Labels are half the magic. Print these and tape them to your jars and bottles:

  • Baking soda → “Dragon Scale Powder”
  • White vinegar → “Witch’s Vinegar”
  • Green food coloring → “Toad Slime”
  • Red food coloring → “Vampire Blood”
  • Purple food coloring → “Midnight Mist”
  • Dish soap → “Bubble Elixir”
  • Glitter → “Fairy Dust”
  • Wooden stir sticks → “Magic Wands”

Write the real ingredient in small print under the fun name, so adults know exactly what everything is. That’s the responsible move, and it doesn’t spoil the magic for the kids at all — in my experience, they think the small print is part of the joke.

Setting Up the Table

Put the table somewhere spills don’t matter — a kitchen counter, a garage table, or outside on the patio. Lay the plastic tablecloth first. Line up the ingredient jars in the order of the recipes, with the labels facing out. Stack the cups at one end and put a small trash bowl at the other end for used stir sticks. One adult stationed at the table for the first 20 minutes is enough; after that, the older kids will run it themselves and teach the younger ones.

If you want the station to double as decoration, add a few plastic spiders, a string of orange lights, and a cauldron-shaped bowl for the baking soda. It takes five minutes and it turns a kitchen table into a photo backdrop.
