Spooky Sounds Guessing Game Printable: 20 Sounds + Answer Sheets
Close Your Eyes and Guess the Fright
Most Halloween games ask you to look at something. This one asks you to listen. A spooky sounds guessing game plays 20 creepy sounds — a creaking door, a wolf’s howl, a witch’s cackle — and your guests write down what they think each sound is. No pictures, no clues, just ears. It’s the rare party game that’s dead quiet while it’s being played and very loud the second the answers are revealed.
The beauty of this game is that anyone can host it. You don’t need special equipment: you can make most of the sounds yourself with household items, or play them from your phone. Print the answer sheets, keep the host key to yourself, and watch a room full of adults argue passionately about whether that sound was a ghost or just a squeaky door.
What You Need
You’ll need one answer sheet per player, a pen each, and a way to play the sounds — your phone and a small speaker work perfectly. If you’d rather make the sounds live, gather a few props: a squeaky door hinge (or a recording of one), a sheet of bubble wrap for crackling bones, a metal baking tray for thunder, and a glass of water with a straw for bubbling potion sounds. Either way works; live sound effects get bigger laughs, recorded ones are more consistent.
Decide before you start whether players work alone or in teams. Solo play is best for small groups; teams of two or three keep a big party moving and let the shy guests contribute without the spotlight.

The 20 Spooky Sounds
Play each sound for about 10 seconds, then give players 15 seconds to write their answer. Don’t replay a sound — the one-shot rule is what makes the game tense. Here are 20 sounds to use, with a simple way to make or find each one:
SPOOKY SOUNDS LIST (host key — don’t show players):
1. Creaking door — slowly open a squeaky door, or play a door-creak clip
2. Wolf howling — howl yourself, or play a wolf-howl clip
3. Witch cackling — your best cackle, or a clip
4. Thunderstorm — shake a metal baking tray, or a thunder clip
5. Bubbling potion — blow through a straw into a glass of water
6. Cracking bones — pop bubble wrap slowly
7. Ghostly moan — hum low with your mouth barely open
8. Bats fluttering — flap a pair of gloves quickly
9. Chains rattling — shake a bunch of keys on a chain
10. Heartbeat — thump the table twice, slowly, over and over
11. Cat screeching — your best impression, or a clip
12. Wind howling through trees — blow across the top of an open bottle
13. Footsteps on creaky stairs — tap your shoes on a wooden board
14. Owl hooting — two low hoots, or a clip
15. Zombie groan — your lowest, slowest groan
16. Creaking coffin lid — drag a wooden box lid slowly
17. Rain on a window — tap your fingertips on a tray
18. Evil laughter — your best villain laugh
19. Scratching at a window — drag your nails lightly across cardboard
20. Church bell tolling — strike a metal pot with a spoon, low and slow
The Answer Sheet
Print one sheet per player. Players write one guess per sound, and the host scores at the end. One point per correct answer; half a point for a close answer (like “ghost noise” for a ghostly moan) if you’re feeling generous.

Running the Game
Dim the lights if you can — it changes the whole mood. The host reads the sound number, plays the sound, and counts down the writing time. No shouting out answers during play; save the arguments for the reveal. When all 20 sounds are done, read the host key out loud one sound at a time, and let players mark their own sheets. The reveal is the best part: someone will have written “my stomach” for the bubbling potion, and the room will lose it.
The player or team with the most correct answers wins. If there’s a tie, play a tiebreaker sound — your single weirdest sound effect — and the first team to name it takes the prize. A small prize works fine: a bag of candy, a spooky pencil, or the honor of picking the next game.

Ways to Change It Up
For kids, cut the list to 10 sounds and pick the silliest ones — the cackle, the bubbling potion, the cat screech, and the bat flutter are always hits. For adults, add a “bonus round” where players have to make a spooky sound themselves and the other teams guess it. For a classroom, use the game as a listening exercise and let students suggest their own sounds for round two.
You can also theme the rounds: round one is “around the haunted house” (door, stairs, chains, bell), round two is “creatures” (wolf, owl, cat, bat, zombie), and round three is “the witch’s kitchen” (potion, bones, thunder, rain, scratching). The structure stays the same; the theme just makes the host key easier to remember.
