Balloon Stomp: Free Printable Halloween Party Game (Rules + Score Sheet)
Every Halloween party hits that moment: the candy’s half gone, the kids have sugar-fueled energy, the adults are standing around with their drinks, and somebody needs a game. Right now. No setup time, no expensive props. That’s exactly the gap Balloon Stomp fills — tie a balloon to everyone’s ankle, stomp everyone else’s, last balloon standing wins.
I’ve hosted this game at three different Halloween parties (two backyard kid parties, one chaotic adult costume night), and it gets bigger laughs than almost anything else I’ve planned. Below is the full rules card, supply list, a copy-paste-ready score sheet, and hosting tips from my own trial and error. Everything here is free — grab what you need.
What You’ll Need
- Balloons: 2–3 per player. Orange and black are the classic Halloween mix. Grab the standard 11 or 12-inch latex kind — they pop well and tie easily.
- Ribbon or string: curling ribbon works great — cut about 2 feet per balloon. Yarn is fine too.
- A pump: unless you enjoy blowing up thirty balloons by yourself. Trust me on this one.
- Scissors: for trimming ribbon ends after tying.
- Play space: a clear area — backyard, garage, or a room with furniture pushed to the walls. At least 15-by-15 feet for 8–10 players; bigger groups need bigger space.

Balloon Stomp: Full Rules Card
Setup (5 minutes)
- Inflate one balloon per player — blow them up to about 10 inches so they pop easily but aren’t too delicate.
- Tie each balloon to a 2-foot length of ribbon or string.
- Have each player tie the free end of the ribbon around one ankle. Snug, not tight — they should be able to wiggle their foot.
- Mark the play boundary. Cones, chalk, or just “stay inside the patio” works.
How to Play
- The goal: stomp and pop everyone else’s balloon while protecting your own.
- When your balloon pops, you’re out. Step out of the play area. (Popped players make an excellent cheering section — or hand them the “ghost” role below.)
- No hands allowed. Stomping feet only. No grabbing, shoving, or tackling — this is the rule that keeps it fun instead of a wrestling match.
- Last balloon standing wins. When one player remains with an intact balloon, they’re the champion.
- Keep spares inflated. People always ask for a second round — have fresh balloons ready.
House Rules Worth Announcing
- Stay inside the boundary. Leaving the play area = you’re out.
- No lifting the balloon. Players who pick their foot up and tuck the balloon away are disqualified for that round. The balloon must dangle freely.
- One warning for rough play. Accidental bumps happen; deliberate shoving gets you out.
- Young kids get a buddy. Pair kids under 6 with an older player who guards them — or let the little ones play their own “stomp the pumpkin patch” round with balloons loose on the floor.

Fun Variations to Try
Ghosts
Popped players become “ghosts” who float around the boundary moaning and distracting survivors. They can’t touch anyone, but a well-timed “booo!” behind a nervous player is half the fun.
Pumpkin Patch (Little Kids)
Skip the ankle-tying for toddlers and preschoolers. Scatter orange balloons loose on the floor, draw jack-o’-lantern faces on them, and let the little ones stomp the “pumpkin patch” for 60 seconds. Who popped the most? No winners or losers needed — everyone gets a sticker.
Double Jeopardy
Tie one balloon to each ankle. Now every player has two lives, and the strategy shifts — turtle up in a corner or go on the offensive? Works best with adults and teens who can handle the chaos.
Monster Teams
Split players into teams of 3–4 (vampires vs. werewolves, witches vs. zombies). A team wins when every opposing balloon is popped. Suddenly it’s strategy, not just chaos — people start guarding each other’s backs.
Surprise Inside
Slip a small wrapped candy or a “prize ticket” into the balloon before inflating. When your balloon pops, you keep whatever’s inside — so eliminated players still walk away with something. Use dark balloons so nobody can peek, and pick up popped balloon pieces right away.

Hosting Tips From My Own Parties
Inflate way more balloons than you think you need. Balloons pop during setup, float away, or get claimed as decorations by kids. My rule now: inflate double the player count, plus a few extra for round two.
Play it outside if you can. The popping is loud — in a small living room with twelve people, it’s genuinely deafening. A backyard or driveway is ideal.
Brief the rules out loud. Nobody reads the card. Announce three rules before starting: feet only, stay in bounds, popped balloon means you’re out.
Have a prize ready. A bag of candy corn, a dollar-store spooky trophy, a “Balloon Stomp Champion” sash — a silly prize makes people play twice as hard.
Sweep the ground after. Latex balloon pieces scatter everywhere and are a choking hazard for pets and small kids, so bag them up.
A note on safety: supervise balloon play around small children — popped balloon pieces and uninflated balloons are a choking hazard. Keep uninflated balloons out of reach of kids under 3.
Why This Game Works So Well for Halloween
Balloon Stomp is cheap, takes five minutes to set up, and works for ages 5 to 75 — it produces the exact kind of loud, shrieky, everyone-filming-it energy that makes a party feel alive. Orange and black balloons match every Halloween decoration scheme ever, and the game looks fantastic in photos.
It’s also one of the rare party games that scales down as well as it scales up. Four people in a living room? Fun. Twenty people at a backyard costume party? Absolute pandemonium. I’ve never seen it fall flat.
