Halloween Monster Red Light Green Light Game Printable: Rules + Rounds

Freeze! The Monster Just Turned Around

Every Halloween party needs one game that gets kids moving, giggling, and totally focused at the same time. Monster red light green light does exactly that. One player becomes the monster and stands at the front with their back turned. Everyone else lines up behind a start line and waits. When the monster shouts “green light,” the group rushes forward. When the monster shouts “red light” and spins around, everybody has to freeze on the spot, mid-step, mid-pose, mid-silly-face. If the monster catches you moving, you head back to the start or sit out for that round, depending on how your group likes to play it.

It’s simple and loud, and it works for mixed ages because nobody needs to learn a complicated setup. Kids already know the rhythm of run and freeze. Add a growly voice and a finish line guarded by pumpkins, and you’ve got a party game that fills ten happy minutes without screens or pricey supplies.

What You Need

You don’t need a store-bought kit. A flat patch of ground, a start line, and a finish line are plenty. Chalk works great on a driveway, painter’s tape works on a gym floor, and a row of pumpkins makes a fun finish line in a backyard. Give the monster space to stand at the front, facing away from the group, so the turn-around moment feels dramatic.

Costumes are optional but they make the game ten times better. The monster can wear a mask, a cape, or just a spooky hat. Players can play in costume too, as long as everyone can move safely and see where they’re going. If a cape, hem, or mask gets in the way, swap it for something easier first. Comfort beats a perfect look when kids are running.

Printable Monster Round Cards

Use one round card per game. The monster reads the card out loud before the round starts, and everyone moves the way the card says. Run the cards in order, or let the monster draw one at random for a surprise round.

ROUND CARD 1: ZOMBIE SHUFFLE
Monster call: “Green light, zombies shuffle!”
How players move: Slow zombie shuffle, arms stretched forward, knees bent.
Freeze rule: Freeze like a statue on “red light.”
Caught moving: Go back to the start line.
Win the round: First zombie to reach the finish line becomes the next monster.

ROUND CARD 2: GHOST FLOAT
Monster call: “Green light, ghosts float!”
How players move: Float forward on tiptoes, arms drifting like a ghost.
Freeze rule: Freeze with arms out wide, like a ghost caught mid-float.
Caught moving: Sit out until the next round starts.
Win the round: First ghost past the finish line becomes the next monster.

ROUND CARD 3: VAMPIRE GLIDE
Monster call: “Green light, vampires glide!”
How players move: Glide forward in smooth, quiet steps, arms held like wings.
Freeze rule: Freeze mid-glide, perfectly still, on “red light.”
Caught moving: Take three big steps back toward the start line.
Win the round: First vampire to the finish line becomes the next monster.

ROUND CARD 4: SKELETON STOMP
Monster call: “Green light, skeletons stomp!”
How players move: Stomp forward with rattly arms and wobbly knees.
Freeze rule: Freeze like a pile of bones on “red light.”
Caught moving: Go back to the start line.
Win the round: First skeleton across the finish line becomes the next monster.

ROUND CARD 5: WITCH HOP
Monster call: “Green light, witches hop!”
How players move: Hop forward like a witch riding a broom, one hop at a time.
Freeze rule: Freeze balanced on one foot on “red light.”
Caught moving: Sit out until the next round starts.
Win the round: First witch past the finish line becomes the next monster.

How to Play

Pick one monster and one finish line. The monster stands at the finish line with their back to the group. Everyone else lines up behind the start line, about fifteen to twenty big steps away. Shorter distances work better for younger kids, and longer distances give older kids a real run. The monster picks a round card and reads it out loud so everyone knows how to move.

When the monster is ready, they face away and call “green light.” Players move toward the finish line in the style on the card. At any moment, the monster calls “red light” and turns around fast. Everyone must freeze instantly. No shuffling feet, no wobbling, no finishing that last step. The monster looks carefully and names anyone they saw moving. Those players follow the penalty on the round card: back to the start, a few steps back, or sitting out until the next round.

Then the monster turns away again, calls “green light,” and the game keeps going. The first player to the finish line wins the round and usually becomes the next monster. That’s a nice built-in prize, since being the monster is the best job in the game. With a big group, let two players share the monster job, one calling and one watching for movers.

A few safe-play notes keep this game fun instead of chaotic. Play on flat ground, and clear toys, cords, and loose rugs from the play area first. No pushing, no grabbing, and no blocking other players. If someone falls, pause the round and check on them first. For small spaces, use the walking variant: everyone walks instead of running. For very young players, skip the sit-out penalty and just send caught movers back to the start.

This is a movement and stop game, not a chasing game. The monster never runs after players, and players never tag each other. The thrill comes from that split second when the monster turns and everyone tries to look like a statue. That’s what sets it apart from freeze dance, where music decides when you stop. Here, the monster decides.

Ways to Change It Up

For a team version, split players into two teams, like Team Zombies and Team Vampires. Each team sends one player at a time, and the team with the most players across the finish line wins. Teammates can cheer, but they can’t warn a frozen player that the monster is about to turn.

For a classroom version, keep the movement small and the rounds short. Use the walking variant, pick a short distance across the room or gym, and rotate the monster every round so lots of students get a turn. The freeze moments double as a quick reset when energy runs high.

You can also flip the roles for a giggle. Let the monster use a silly voice for each card: a spooky whisper for vampires, a creaky groan for zombies, a floaty “booo” for ghosts. Or add a bonus rule: if the monster laughs while turning around, frozen players get two free steps forward.
