Halloween Scattergories Printable (Free Game)

A Free Halloween Scattergories Game That Actually Works on Paper

Scattergories is one of those games everyone remembers loving but nobody owns anymore — the little plastic dice with the letters is always missing, and the category cards vanished years ago. Here’s the good news: you don’t need any of that. A Halloween Scattergories printable works just as well, and honestly I think the themed version is better than the original. There’s something about racing your sister to come up with a Halloween candy that starts with Q that the regular game just can’t match.

This article is the complete game. Below you’ll find the rules, a letter-rolling method that needs no special dice, four full category lists, and a printable round sheet you can copy onto paper. Print what you need, set a timer, and play.

How to Play Halloween Scattergories

Every player gets a copy of the round sheet (or a blank paper with the categories copied down). The host picks a letter — more on how to pick one below. Everyone gets the same categories, the same letter, and the same time limit. Your job: write one answer per category that starts with that letter.

When time’s up, players read their answers out loud, category by category. Here’s the twist that makes Scattergories brilliant: if two players wrote the same answer, nobody gets a point for it. Only unique answers score. So the safe answer and the clever answer are worth exactly the same — but the clever answer is the only one that survives.

Picking the Letter (No Dice Needed)

The classic game uses a 20-sided letter die, but you’ve got options:

  • The bowl method: Write the letters A through Z on slips of paper, toss them in a bowl, and draw one per round. My favorite — it feels official.
  • The phone method: Ask someone to close their eyes and tap a random letter, or use any free random-letter generator online.
  • The theme method: Use the letters of a Halloween word instead. Play one round per letter of GHOST, then TRICK, then WITCH, then TREAT. Four rounds, twenty letters, zero equipment.

Skip the letters Q, X, and Z unless your group loves suffering. Seriously. “A Halloween costume that starts with X” ends friendships.

The Rules (Keep Them Simple)

  • Time limit: Two minutes per round for adults, three for kids or mixed groups.
  • Scoring: One point per unique answer. Matching answers cancel each other out — both players cross them off.
  • Judging answers: The group votes on anything questionable. If most of the table accepts it, it counts. The host breaks ties.
  • Blank answers: No answer, no point. No partial credit for “I almost had one.”
  • Winner: Most points after all rounds. In case of a tie, play one sudden-death round with a new letter.

Round Sheet 3: Witches, Ghosts, and Magic

The creative round. This is where the weird answers come out, and the weird answers are the ones that win.

  1. A witch’s name
  2. Something in a spell
  3. A ghost’s name
  4. Something that flies
  5. A magic word
  6. A haunted place
  7. A creepy crawly
  8. Something purple
  9. A fortune teller’s tool
  10. A potion ingredient
  11. A famous witch or wizard
  12. Something you’d find in a graveyard

Round Sheet 4: The Hard Mode

Save this one for the competitive crowd. These categories look innocent and then the timer starts.

  1. A Halloween song
  2. A costume that starts fights (couples edition)
  3. Something you’d find in a corn maze
  4. A scary book
  5. A Halloween emoji (describe it)
  6. Something sticky
  7. A villain
  8. A midnight snack
  9. Something you wear in October
  10. A haunted house room
  11. A Halloween smell
  12. Something that crunches

How to Set Up Your Printable Round Sheet

You don’t need fancy design software. Open any blank document and type the round title at the top, number the categories 1 through 12, and leave a blank line after each one for writing. Add a line at the top for the player’s name and the round letter. Print one per player per round — so for 6 players playing 3 rounds, that’s 18 sheets. It sounds like a lot, but it’s just paper, and everyone having their own sheet is what makes the game work.

Quick tip from experience: print on the back of scrap paper if you’re doing lots of rounds. Nobody cares what the other side looks like, and you’ll feel better about the paper pile at the end of the night.

Variations to Keep It Fresh

Team mode: Split into teams of two or three and let them whisper-debate their answers. The arguments are the entertainment.

Kids’ mode: Use only Round Sheet 1, give three minutes, and allow any answer the child can explain. A five-year-old who writes “pumpkin” for everything deserves points for consistency.

Speed round: One minute, six categories, picked on the spot by the host. Brutal and hilarious.

Reverse round: The host names a category and a letter, and players race to shout answers. First unique answer called out wins the point. No writing at all.
