The Rules Card (Read This Out Loud)

Halloween Two Truths and a Lie Game Printable

HALLOWEEN TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE — OFFICIAL RULES

  1. Each player writes down three statements about themselves: two true, one false. At least one statement should be Halloween-themed (a costume story, a scary movie opinion, a trick-or-treat memory).
  2. Players take turns reading their three statements aloud — in any order.
  3. After each player reads, everyone else votes on which statement is the lie. Vote by pointing, by show of hands, or with the voting slips below.
  4. The reader reveals the lie. Everyone who guessed correctly scores 1 point.
  5. Bonus: if NOBODY guesses your lie correctly, you score 3 points for a perfect bluff.
  6. Play one full round so everyone gets a turn. Highest score wins.

Ready-Made Statement Sets (For Shy Players)

Some guests freeze when you say “tell us three things about yourself.” Hand them one of these sets — two are true for a fictional player, one is the lie — and let them read it as their own. (Or use them as examples to get brains working.) Answers are at the bottom of each set.

Set 1 — The Costume Collection

  • I’ve worn the same Halloween costume three years in a row.
  • I once won a costume contest dressed as a vending machine.
  • I’ve never been trick-or-treating in my life.

The lie: the vending machine win. (The other two are sadly true.)

Set 2 — The Scaredy-Cat

  • I can’t watch horror movies without keeping the lights on.
  • I’ve been through a haunted house twice — screaming the whole way both times.
  • I’ve spent the night in a supposedly haunted hotel on purpose.

The lie: the haunted hotel. (This player would never.)

Set 3 — The Candy Expert

  • I sort my Halloween candy by color before eating any of it.
  • My favorite Halloween candy is candy corn.
  • I once traded my entire candy haul for a single full-size bar.

The lie: candy corn being the favorite. (Nobody’s favorite is candy corn. It’s fine — it’s a relay game candy.)

Set 4 — The Party Legend

  • I’ve bobbed for apples at four different Halloween parties.
  • I once carved a pumpkin that looked exactly like my dog.
  • I’ve hosted a Halloween party every year for a decade.

The lie: the decade of hosting. (It’s been three years, and one of them was just pizza and a movie.)

Set 5 — The Horror Fan

  • I’ve seen every movie in a famous slasher franchise.
  • My favorite Halloween movie is a comedy, not a horror.
  • I’ve dressed as a horror movie villain for Halloween.

The lie: dressing as the villain. (This player goes as a pun costume every year.)

Set 6 — The Trick-or-Treat Veteran

  • I once trick-or-treated in the rain for three hours straight.
  • I’ve egged a house on Halloween. (Don’t tell my mom.)
  • I still have candy from last Halloween hidden somewhere.

The lie: the egging. (This player was an angel. Allegedly.)

Set 7 — The Decorator

  • My house has twelve inflatable Halloween decorations.
  • I start decorating for Halloween in September.
  • I’ve never carved a pumpkin — I only paint them.

The lie: twelve inflatables. (It’s seven. There’s a difference.)

Set 8 — The Brave One

  • I’ve walked through a corn maze at night.
  • I’ve held a tarantula at a Halloween event.
  • I’ve gone skydiving in a costume.

The lie: the skydiving. (Everything else was terrifying enough.)

Set 9 — The Movie Buff

  • I cry every time I watch a certain friendly-ghost movie.
  • I’ve never finished watching a zombie movie — too gory.
  • I know all the words to the theme song of a famous Halloween film.

The lie: never finishing a zombie movie. (This player has seen them all, popcorn in hand.)

Set 10 — The Night Owl

  • I’ve stayed up past midnight on Halloween every year since I was ten.
  • I’ve told ghost stories around a campfire.
  • I’ve used a Ouija board at a Halloween party.

The lie: the Ouija board. (This player draws the line at summoning things.)

Set 11 — The Crafty One

  • I’ve made my Halloween costume from scratch twice.
  • I can carve a pumpkin in under twenty minutes.
  • I’ve won a pumpkin decorating contest.

The lie: the contest win. (Second place. Still bitter about it.)

Set 12 — The Skeptic

  • I don’t believe in ghosts, but I won’t say so in a cemetery.
  • I’ve investigated a “haunted” house with friends as a teenager.
  • I’ve seen something I genuinely can’t explain.

The lie: the unexplained sighting. (It was a raccoon. Probably.)

Blank Player Cards (Print and Cut)

MY TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE
Player name: ____________________

Statement 1: ______________________________________________

Statement 2: ______________________________________________

Statement 3: ______________________________________________

Circle the lie (only you see this card):   1    2    3

Tip for players: the best lies are almost true. “I’ve carved 40 pumpkins in one October” beats “I’ve never carved a pumpkin” — it sounds like exactly the kind of unhinged thing a Halloween person would do.

Voting Slips

Cut these into slips — one per player per round.

VOTING SLIP
I’m voting on: ______________ (player name)
I think the lie is statement:   1    2    3
My name: ______________

Score Sheet (For the Host)

TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE — SCORE SHEET
Player name | Correct guesses (1 pt each) | Perfect bluffs (3 pts each) | Total
____________ | ____________ | ____________ | ______
____________ | ____________ | ____________ | ______
____________ | ____________ | ____________ | ______
____________ | ____________ | ____________ | ______
WINNER: ______________

Hosting Tips

  • Go first yourself. The host reading a set breaks the ice and shows everyone the format. Use one of the ready-made sets above if you don’t want to reveal your own secrets.
  • Set a Halloween-theme rule loosely. “At least one statement Halloween-related” keeps the theme without stressing people out. Costume stories and candy opinions count.
  • Keep the pace moving. Give each player about two minutes. If someone rambles through a ten-minute backstory, the timer is your friend.
  • For kids’ parties, change the theme to “spooky-ish”: favorite costume, scariest (not really scary) thing that happened, favorite candy. Skip the bluff bonus — kids will argue about it.

Print the cards, pour the cider, and find out which of your friends has actually been in a corn maze at midnight.
