Halloween Zombie Walk Race Printable: Rules & Judging Scorecard
The Slowest Race You’ll Ever Cheer For
Most party races are about speed. This one is about the exact opposite. In a Halloween zombie walk race, the goal is to shamble, groan, and lurch your way down the course in character — and the winner isn’t just the first zombie across the line. Style counts just as much as speed, thanks to a judging scorecard that rewards the best groan, the best shuffle, and the best costume-in-motion. It’s the rare race where going too fast actually hurts your score.
I’ve watched this game turn a quiet backyard into a full-on zombie parade. People who would never enter a running race suddenly commit to the bit — arms out, knees stiff, heads lolling — because the judging rewards commitment, not athleticism. Kids, grandparents, and everyone in between can play, and the crowd has just as much fun watching as the zombies have shambling.
Setting Up the Course
Pick a clear, flat course about 30 to 50 feet long — a driveway, a flat stretch of lawn, or a sidewalk section works well. Mark a start line and a finish line with tape, chalk, or cones, and keep the lane wide enough for three or four zombies side by side. Clear the course completely before the race: no garden hoses, no stray toys, no uneven pavers, no low branches. The whole point is a slow, safe shamble, so the ground needs to be boring and predictable.
Set up a judging table near the finish line with a clear view of the whole course. Judges watch every zombie from start to finish, so seat them where they can see the groaning, the shuffling, and the costumes in motion all at once.

The Rules (Print This Part)
Walking Only — No Running
This is the golden rule. Zombies walk, shamble, lurch, and drag — they never run. Any zombie who breaks into a run gets a 5-point penalty on their total score, and a second offense disqualifies that heat. Judges call it out loud (“Running! Penalty!”) so the crowd can enjoy the shame.
Stay in Character
Arms out in front or dragging at your sides, stiff legs, slow head turns, and groaning are all encouraged. Talking in a normal voice breaks character and costs style points. The best zombies commit from the start line to the finish line without dropping the act, even when the crowd is laughing.
Heats and the Final
Race in heats of three or four zombies. Each heat is scored on the scorecard below. The top scorer from each heat advances to the final shamble, where the judges score fresh and the highest total wins the title of Supreme Zombie.

Safety Notes
Safety comes first, even in a zombie race. The course must be clear and flat, with no tripping hazards — walk it yourself before the first heat and move anything that could catch a foot. Walking only is a safety rule as much as a style rule: running in costume, especially with masks or face paint limiting vision, is how someone falls. If a zombie wears a mask, make sure they can see clearly before they start, or have them carry the mask and wear face paint instead. Keep the finish area clear so zombies don’t pile up, and have a helper at the finish line to catch anyone who gets wobbly. Younger kids race in their own heat, on a shorter course, with an adult walking alongside.

Tips for a Great Race
Play spooky music during the race — slow, droning tracks work better than fast ones, because they set the shambling pace. Announce each zombie with a dramatic introduction (“From the backyard crypt…”) and let the crowd cheer before the start. And give out more than one prize if you can: Supreme Zombie for the overall winner, plus fun titles like Best Groan and Most Committed Zombie, so more players walk away with something.
