Halloween Movie Night Drinking Game

Pick any classic spooky movie and take a sip whenever a trope below appears. Sips, not gulps — that’s what keeps this one going all night.

Take a Sip When…

  • A jack-o’-lantern appears on screen.
  • Someone says “don’t go in there” — or goes in anyway.
  • A character investigates a strange noise alone.
  • The power goes out at the worst moment.
  • A phone rings and nobody answers in time.
  • Someone trips while running from nothing visible.
  • A creepy kid stares silently at the camera.
  • A black cat crosses the screen.
  • Someone says “it’s probably just the wind.”
  • Thunder cracks for dramatic effect.
  • A door creaks open in slow motion.
  • A mirror shows something that shouldn’t be there.

Once per movie: finish your drink when the credits roll into one last jump scare. One finish per film keeps the game balanced.

Never Have I Ever: Halloween Edition

Everyone holds a drink. Take turns reading a prompt aloud — anyone who has done it sips. Twenty original prompts:

  1. Never have I ever worn the same costume two years in a row.
  2. Never have I ever eaten so much Halloween candy I felt sick.
  3. Never have I ever been too scared to finish a horror movie.
  4. Never have I ever screamed loudest in a haunted house.
  5. Never have I ever carved a pumpkin and regretted the design.
  6. Never have I ever used a Halloween party as an excuse to flirt.
  7. Never have I ever watched a scary movie alone with the lights off.
  8. Never have I ever answered the door in costume just to get a reaction.
  9. Never have I ever kept the good candy and handed out the cheap stuff.
  10. Never have I ever had a costume malfunction in public.
  11. Never have I ever jumped at my own reflection after something scary.
  12. Never have I ever stayed up past midnight reading ghost stories.
  13. Never have I ever faked recognizing someone’s costume.
  14. Never have I ever trick-or-treated past the “acceptable” age.
  15. Never have I ever been startled by my own forgotten decoration.
  16. Never have I ever searched whether a movie’s “haunted” place is real.
  17. Never have I ever enjoyed candy corn unironically.
  18. Never have I ever fallen asleep during a horror marathon.
  19. Never have I ever bought a costume on November 1st just because it was 70 percent off.
  20. Never have I ever told a ghost story I swore was “totally true.”

House rule: if nobody sips, the reader sips out of solidarity.

Witch’s Brew Dice Game

One die, three or more players in a circle, and a pen to track the running “brew total,” starting at zero. Play clockwise.

  • Roll and add the number to the brew total.
  • Total hits exactly 13: the witch claims her due — you sip twice, total resets to zero.
  • Total goes over 13: the brew boils over — you sip once, total resets to zero.
  • Roll a 6 (“Toil and Trouble”): everyone sips once, the total resets, and you pick the next roller or reverse direction.
  • Roll a 1 (“Eye of Newt”): add your drop and choose one person to sip with you.

Play about twenty minutes. Sips stay small and spread around the table — exactly the point.

Halloween Kings

A spooky twist on the classic card-draw game. One standard deck, players in a circle, one card per turn:

  • Ace — Vampire’s Ace: everyone sips.
  • 2 — Double Trouble: pick two people to sip.
  • 3 — Potion Buddy: choose a buddy; whenever you sip, they sip, until the next 3.
  • 4 — Pumpkin Guts: last to touch the floor sips.
  • 5 — Ghost Story: tell a two-sentence scary story; best audience reaction assigns a sip.
  • 6 — Witch’s Cackle: everyone cackles; worst cackle sips.
  • 7 — Haunted Heaven: last to point at the ceiling sips.
  • 8 — Coven Mate: pick someone; whenever they sip you sip too, until the next 8.
  • 9 — Spell Rhyme: chain rhyming spooky words — bat, cat, hat… first to hesitate sips.
  • 10 — Costume Countdown: name costumes around the circle; first to stall sips.
  • Jack — Jack-o’-Lantern: everyone makes a scary face; the drawer picks the scariest to assign a sip.
  • Queen — Séance Questions: ask a player a question; they must answer with a question. First to fail sips.
  • King — The Witching Hour: invent one table rule, like “no saying pumpkin” — breakers sip. The fourth King ends the game: everyone toasts Halloween, and the drawer picks the next game.

Costume Charades With a Drinking Twist

Two teams. Write Halloween phrases on slips — or cut up ours below — and drop them in a bowl. Teams alternate actors; each gets 60 silent seconds, no speaking or mouthing words.

  • Your team guesses in time: the other team sips.
  • Time runs out: your team sips.
  • The actor talks or mouths words: the actor sips and the turn passes.

Twenty ready-made phrases: vampire dentist, werewolf at a job interview, ghost doing yoga, zombie grocery shopping, witch stuck in traffic, mummy wrapping a gift, skeleton playing piano, haunted toaster, ghost on a roller coaster, werewolf getting a haircut, witch brewing coffee, zombie yoga class, vampire applying sunscreen, mummy running a marathon, ghost opening a jar, skeleton dancing ballet, witch parallel parking a broomstick, vampire at a garlic festival, zombie at the DMV, ghost carving a pumpkin.

Pacing Tips: Keep It Fun All Night

  • Alternate every alcoholic drink with a full glass of water.
  • Eat before and during — snacks beat an empty stomach every time.
  • Know your limit; stop when the fun stops feeling fun.
  • Never pressure anyone to drink — the cider-and-soda players are full players.
  • Plan rides home before the first pour.
  • Anyone can sit a round out, no questions asked.

How to Print These Games

  1. Print the rules per table, plus the Never Have I Ever prompts and charades phrases to cut into slips.
  2. Bring a standard deck of cards for Halloween Kings and one die for Witch’s Brew.
  3. Keep a pen handy for the Witch’s Brew running total.
