Pin the Hat on the Witch: Free Printable Halloween Party Game

Pin the Hat on the Witch is the Halloween version of the classic party game everyone grew up with. Blindfold the player, spin them around, and watch them try to stick the witch’s hat in the right spot while the whole room cracks up. It takes five minutes to set up, works for kids and adults, and it is one of those games that never fails to get a laugh.

Below you will find the complete free printable set: a witch poster, a sheet of witch hats, a blindfold you can cut out and tie, and the full rules. Print it, tape the poster to the wall, and you have a party game ready to go.

What Is Pin the Hat on the Witch?

If you have ever played Pin the Tail on the Donkey, you already know this game. Instead of a donkey, players pin a pointed witch hat onto a witch’s head. The witch in our printable is missing her hat, and each blindfolded player has to place it as close to the right spot as possible.

I love this game because it works for practically any Halloween gathering. Little kids think it is hilarious, and teenagers pretend they are too cool for it, then get the most competitive about it. It needs no explaining, no teams, and no special equipment beyond a printer.

What Your Free Printable Set Includes

The free download gives you everything the game needs, sized to print at home:

  • The witch poster — a large witch illustration printed across two sheets you tape together, or a single-sheet version if you want a smaller game for a classroom or tabletop.
  • Twelve witch hats — pointed hats in orange, purple, black, and green with buckles. Print extra copies if you have a big group so every player gets a fresh hat.
  • A cut-out blindfold — a simple mask shape with eye holes blocked out. Punch holes on the sides, thread string or ribbon through, and tie it at the back. Any scarf or sleep mask works too.
  • Name labels — small write-in tags so each player writes their name on their hat before their turn. This stops all arguments about whose hat is whose.

Print the poster on regular paper and tape it to a wall at about shoulder height. Cardstock is better for the hats since it holds its shape when players handle it with sticky tape or a glue dot on the back.

How to Play: Step-by-Step Rules

Setup takes about five minutes once everything is printed and cut:

  1. Hang the witch. Tape the witch poster to a smooth wall or door. Pick a spot with clear space around it so players can be spun safely.
  2. Prep the hats. Cut out one hat per player. Write each player’s name on the back of their hat and stick a small piece of tape, a glue dot, or a bit of poster putty on the back.
  3. Blindfold and spin. The player stands about six to eight feet from the poster. Tie on the blindfold, then gently spin them around three times. For little kids, skip the spinning or do one slow turn.
  4. Pin the hat. The player walks toward the wall and sticks their hat wherever they think the witch’s head is. Friends can shout directions — or deliberately terrible directions, which is honestly the fun part.
  5. Judge the winner. Once everyone has gone, the hat closest to the witch’s head wins. For a sillier judging round, give out awards for “most creative placement” and “farthest from the target.”

One rule I always enforce: no peeking under the blindfold, and the crowd is allowed to heckle. The heckling is half the game.

Fun Variations for Kids, Teens, and Adults

The basic game is great on its own, but a few twists keep it fresh:

For little kids (ages 4-7)

Skip the blindfold spin — just the blindfold is disorienting enough at this age. Let them stand closer to the poster, and have a grown-up guide their shoulders so nobody bumps into furniture. Give every kid a small prize for playing so nobody feels left out.

For teens

Turn it into a tournament. Players go head to head in brackets, and the closest hat in each round moves on. Add a twist: before pinning, the player has to name three Halloween movies or do their best witch cackle.

For adults

This is where it gets fun. Play it as a relay: teams take turns, and each team’s total distance from the target adds up — lowest team total wins. Or raise the stakes with a prize for the winner and a silly forfeit for the worst placement, like wearing the witch hat for the rest of the party.

Glow-in-the-dark version

Print the witch on dark paper or trace the outline with glow-in-the-dark paint, and play with the lights low. It is a fantastic twist for an evening party, and the photos are incredible.

Printing and Setup Tips

A few things I have learned from running this game at actual parties:

  • Print at 100% scale. Do not let your printer shrink the poster to fit margins, or the witch comes out tiny and the game feels cramped.
  • Laminate if you can. A laminated poster and laminated hats survive multiple parties. Cheap self-adhesive laminating sheets from any craft store work fine.
  • Use poster putty over tape. Tape on the back of each hat gets gummy after a few players. Removable poster putty sticks just as well and peels off clean.
  • Clear the landing zone. Move furniture back and keep the floor clear. Blindfolded people and coffee tables are a bad combination.
  • Print extra hats. Someone always wants a rematch. Ten extra hats cost you one more sheet of paper and save the day.

Prizes and Scoring Ideas

You do not need expensive prizes. A bag of fun-size candy, a plastic spider ring, or a “Witch Hat Champion” certificate (there is one in the premium bundle) is plenty. For scoring, measure from the center of the witch’s head to where each hat landed — closest wins. If two hats tie, they go again in a sudden-death pin-off, which the crowd always loves.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players can play?

There is no real limit. It works with 4 players or 40 — just print more hats. With big groups, run two posters side by side to keep the line moving.

What age is this game good for?

Ages 4 and up. Little kids play the gentle version (no spinning, closer distance), and the adult variations keep it fun well past the kid years.

Can I play it outdoors?

Yes — tape the poster to a fence or garage door and weigh it down if it is windy. The glow-in-the-dark version is great outside after sunset.
