Pumpkin Head Balance Relay: Free Printable Halloween Party Game
There’s a moment at every great Halloween party when someone does something so gloriously silly the whole room loses it. For me, that’s the pumpkin head balance relay: your friend, dead serious, creeping across the living room with a mini pumpkin wobbling on their head while everyone else is doubled over laughing.
Here’s the idea: balance a small pumpkin on your head, walk a short course with no hands, and pass it to the next player. Drop it, and you start over. It works for sugar-fueled eight-year-olds and for adults who swore they were “just stopping by for one drink.”
Best part? Everything you need is right here, free. The pumpkin-picking tips, the course setup, the full rules, the scorecard, and the penalty cards — print this page, cut out the cards, and you’re ready to play tonight.
What You’ll Need
- Small pumpkins, one per player (plus spares). Not every mini pumpkin balances. Pick small, squat, flat-bottomed ones — the wide little guys that sit steady. Tall, pointy pumpkins slide off in two steps. Test each one on your head the day before, and grab a few extras.
- Tape, cones, or rope to mark your start line, finish line, and course boundaries.
- 2–3 simple obstacles — chairs to walk around, a broomstick resting between two chairs to duck under, couch cushions to step over.
- Printed scorecards (one per team) and the penalty cards below, cut apart.
- A timer — your phone works perfectly.
- Optional but smart: cheap headbands. Adults in full costume hair and makeup will thank you.

Setting Up the Course
A straight 20–30 foot lane works in a backyard or long hallway; a loop around the living room works too. Mark start and finish with tape, place two or three obstacles along the way, and clear the lane of trip hazards — cords, toys, uneven patio stones. Grass is the friendliest surface, since dropped pumpkins crack on hard floors. A quick walk-through by the host, pumpkin on head and no hands, settles every “wait, how does this work?” question instantly.
The Rules
Read these out loud before the first round — sixty seconds now saves ten minutes of arguing later.
- Split into teams of 3–6. Each team gets a name and a scorecard.
- The first player places the pumpkin on their own head. Hands are allowed for placing it. Once they cross the start line, hands come off — no touching the pumpkin.
- Walk the course. Running is allowed, but running is how pumpkins end up in the punch bowl.
- Dropped your pumpkin? Pick it up, go back to the start (or the last checkpoint in the kid version below), and walk it again. In the adult version, you also draw a penalty card.
- The handoff: at the finish line, take the pumpkin OFF your head and hand it to the next teammate — no passing a balanced pumpkin head-to-head.
- First team with every player through wins the round. Best of three; add 5 seconds per dropped pumpkin.
Printable Scorecard
Print one per team. Log each round’s time, drops, and penalty cards — 5 seconds per drop get added. Lowest adjusted total wins.

Printable Penalty Cards
Cut these apart and drop them in a bowl. In the adult version, every dropped pumpkin means drawing one card before continuing.
PUMPKIN HEAD BALANCE RELAY — PENALTY CARDS
Cut along the lines. Draw one card for every dropped pumpkin.
| 1. Spin in place twice, then keep walking. | 2. Walk 10 steps with arms straight out like a zombie. |
| 3. Let out your best ghost howl — loud enough for everyone to hear. | 4. Hop on one foot for 10 steps. |
| 5. Say “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pumpkins” three times fast. | 6. Freeze for a 10-count while everyone cheers. |
| 7. Cackle like a witch for the rest of the course. | 8. Take three giant monster steps. |
| 9. Do your best vampire hiss at the next player in line. | 10. Walk backward 5 steps (carefully!). |
| 11. Strike your scariest pose for a photo. | 12. Compliment the host’s costume in your spookiest voice. |
Team Relay vs. Solo Play
The team relay is the classic, but two solo versions work great too:
- Time trial: everyone walks the course alone, timed. Fewest drops wins; time breaks ties.
- Last pumpkin standing: everyone walks at once — slowly. Last person still balancing wins. No course needed.
Kid Version and Adult Version
For kids: shorten the course to 10–15 feet with easy obstacles. Set 2–3 checkpoints — a dropped pumpkin means going back to the last one, not the start. Skip the penalty cards, or keep only the silliest as fun bonuses. Foam pumpkins are great for toddlers, and every player gets a sticker at the end.
For adults: stretch the course, add a tricky obstacle (ducking under a broomstick with a pumpkin on your head is harder than it sounds), and enforce penalty cards on every drop. Try a “costume round” in full costume — capes and big hats change the physics. Keep it light and safe.

Hosting Tips That Save the Night
- Run this in the first hour, while energy is high and before the sugar crash.
- Test your pumpkins the day before — including having someone actually walk with one.
- Assign one scorekeeper per team so the host isn’t doing math mid-party.
- Put your funniest friend on commentary. A play-by-play announcer turns a good game into a legendary one.
- Take photos of the wobbles, not just the wins. The mid-wobble faces are the keepers.
- Anyone who’d rather not balance can referee, keep score, or read penalty cards. Everyone plays a part.
