Halloween Poke a Pumpkin Game Printable: Punch Board + Challenge Cards
The Punch Board Everyone Wants a Turn At
Poke a Pumpkin looks impressive and is secretly simple. You build a board covered in cups, each sealed with orange tissue paper, shaped like a big pumpkin. Players poke through a cup cover and pull out what is hidden. The twist: most cups hide a challenge card, not just candy. A player might win a prize, or have to do a zombie walk, and that surprise is the whole game.
Do-it-yourself punch boards are usually just candy boards. This version is different because the challenge cards are written out here, ready to print and slip into cups. You do not have to invent dares on the spot.
What You Need
One large foam board, poster board, or piece of cardboard
Twenty-five small plastic cups or paper cups, all the same size
Orange tissue paper, cut into squares big enough to cover each cup
Rubber bands or tape to hold the tissue paper over the cups
Hot glue, craft glue, or strong tape to attach cups to the board
Orange and green construction paper or paint for the pumpkin shape
A black marker for the pumpkin face
The twenty challenge cards written out below, copied onto small slips of paper
Small prizes and candy for the prize cups
A pencil or wooden dowel for poking, optional for younger kids
How to Set Up Your Pumpkin Punch Board
Shape your board into a pumpkin. Cut a rectangular board into a rounded shape, or glue orange paper in a big circle onto the board and add a green stem. Draw a jack-o’-lantern face around the cups, or let the cups form the shape.
Glue cups to the board in rows, open side out, packed close together. Five rows of five makes twenty-five cups, great for ten to twenty players. Let the glue dry fully before filling, or cups will pop off mid-game.
Fill the cups now. Put a folded challenge card in most cups. In five cups, add a small prize with a card that says Prize Cup. In two cups, add a Jackpot card and a slightly bigger prize, like a small toy.
Cover each cup with orange tissue paper, secured with a rubber band or tape. It should look neat but poke through easily with a finger. Test one cup before the party, and use a single layer if it takes real force.
How to Play Poke a Pumpkin
Players take turns. Pick any covered cup, poke through the tissue paper, and pull out what is inside. Read the card out loud and do what it says. If it is a prize cup, take your prize and enjoy the applause.
Keep playing until every cup is poked, or every player has had two turns. For a smaller group, allow two or three pokes each. For a larger group, one poke each keeps the game moving.
If a player does not want a challenge, let them pass and draw another card, or pick a friend to do it with them. For very young kids, read the card and do the challenge together as a group.

Challenge Card 18: Walk backward across the room like a crab, sideways, without bumping into anything.
Challenge Card 19: Recite a Halloween tongue twister three times fast, or make one up.
Challenge Card 20: Give a compliment to every player in the room, one each, in a spooky voice.
Prize Cups: Write “Prize Cup! Take a treat!” on five slips, and “Jackpot! Take a big prize!” on two slips. Place these in seven cups, and fill the remaining eighteen cups with the challenge cards above, using your favorites twice if you have twenty-five cups. That mix keeps the surprises coming, because nobody knows whether the next poke brings a dare or a prize.
Fun Variations to Try
Try a classroom version: swap five challenge cards for simple questions, like spelling a Halloween word, and keep the rest silly.
Try a grown-up version for an office party. Write challenges like telling a two-sentence work horror story, or naming a Halloween movie for every letter of the word pumpkin.
Try a team version: each team picks a cup on its turn. A completed challenge scores one point, a prize cup scores two. First team to ten points wins.
Tips and Safety Notes
Use blunt pencils or fingers for poking, never sharp objects, and supervise young children. Check for allergies before handing out treats. Keep the board stable against a wall or sturdy table so it cannot tip over. Keep challenges kind and optional.
