Halloween Ghost Hide and Seek Game Printable: Base Cards + Seeker Rules
Hide as a Ghost, Not From One
Ghost hide and seek flips the usual Halloween game on its head. This is not a paper-ghost hunt where players search for hidden paper ghosts, and that distinction matters, because the two games get confused all the time. In this game, the players themselves hide as ghosts, dressed in white sheets or cloaks if they want the full effect, while one seeker counts and tries to find them all. It is classic hide-and-seek with a costume, a base, and a spooky twist, and it works beautifully at night with flashlights.
Kids love hiding in a sheet, even when their shoes stick out underneath. Adults love it because it needs almost no setup and gets everyone moving. This printable gives you the seeker rules, base rules, night variant, and base cards.
What You Need
White sheets, old tablecloths, or white cloaks, one per ghost, optional
A safe hiding area, a yard, a house, or a community room
A marked ghost base or safe zone, using tape, cones, or a blanket
A flashlight for the seeker in the night variant
Small flashlights or glow sticks for ghosts in the night variant, optional
The printable ghost base cards below
A pen or marker for the base cards
A timer or phone for counting rounds
A small prize for the last ghost found
Setup
Walk the hiding area first and set clear boundaries. A fenced yard is perfect. Indoors, pick two or three rooms and close the rest off. List off-limits spots out loud before round one: no locking closets, attics, garages, streets, or neighbours’ yards.
Mark the ghost base clearly: a porch, a blanket, or a taped circle, where found ghosts wait and where hidden ghosts can run for safety in some variants. Keep it visible from the counting spot, but not so close that hiding near it is pointless. Hand out a base card per player, with their ghost name written on it.
Pick the first seeker by counting out or drawing a name. The seeker stands at base, covers their eyes, and counts out loud: thirty for a small yard, sixty for a house, one hundred for a big yard at night. Sheets are optional, and a well-hidden ghost in dark clothes beats a badly hidden ghost in a sheet every time.
How to Play: Seeker Rules + Ghost Base Rules
When counting ends, the seeker calls out a phrase like ghosts, are you ready, and starts searching. Found ghosts are called by name, or by ghost name if you are using the cards, and they walk to the base to wait. No running away after you are found, no arguing that you were not really seen, and no switching hiding spots after the search starts. A clean find is a clean find, and the seeker should be specific: I see Willow behind the oak tree, not just got you somewhere over there.
The round ends when every ghost is found or the timer runs out. The last ghost found wins and becomes the next seeker, or picks the next seeker. If the same player keeps winning, handicap them next round, like hiding without a sheet.
In the base-race variant, a hidden ghost who touches base before the seeker tags them is safe for that round. The seeker must guard base while searching, and ghosts must judge when to run for it. A ghost tagged on the way is found. Agree before the round whether base-race is on or off.
For younger kids, use the gentle version: count to twenty, hide in obvious-ish spots, and let found ghosts help the seeker find the rest instead of waiting quietly at base.

Variations
The night variant, often called Ghost in the Graveyard, is played after dark in a yard, with the seeker carrying a flashlight. A ghost caught in the beam is found, but one who reaches base uncaught wins the round. Keep the area small, keep an adult supervising, and give every player a glow stick.
For mixed ages, try team ghosts: pair a younger child with an older buddy, hiding together as one ghost. For a rainy day, shrink the boundaries to two rooms plus a hallway, with lights low and a flashlight seeker.
Tips and Safety
Walk the area first, set firm boundaries, and ban hiding spots that lock, climb high, or leave the property. Sheets must not cover faces while running, and eye holes should be cut wide enough to see clearly, because a blindfolded runner is an accident waiting to happen. At night, keep an adult in the yard, give every player a glow stick or flashlight, and stop the game if anyone is scared or upset. Flashlights should point at the ground or at hiding spots, never directly into someone’s eyes, and the seeker should walk, not sprint, through dark areas.
