Halloween Pumpkin Smash Game Printable: Ankle Balloons + Last Pumpkin Standing
Stomp, Pop, Last Pumpkin Standing
Pumpkin smash is the loudest, silliest, most gloriously chaotic game you can run at a Halloween party, and it costs almost nothing. Each player ties an orange balloon to each ankle, and those balloons are their pumpkins. The goal is simple: stomp everyone else’s pumpkins while keeping your own alive. Last pumpkin standing wins. Kids love it because it is fast and physical. Adults love it because it turns a polite party into a laughing, stomping mess within about ninety seconds.
The trick is not the balloons, it is the rules. Without them, the game turns into grabbing and shoving. With the stomp-only rule, a marked zone, and this tracker, it stays fair, and even shy players join in once the first balloons pop.
What You Need
Orange balloons, at least two per player plus spares
Short lengths of string or ribbon for tying balloons to ankles
A balloon pump, because blowing up twenty balloons by mouth is a party foul
A marked battle zone, using cones, tape, chalk, or rope
A whistle or a loud voice for start and stop
The printable last-pumpkin-standing tracker below
A pen or marker for the tracker
A small prize for the winner, plus a consolation treat for everyone
Setup
Inflate balloons to a medium size, not fully stretched. A bursting-point balloon pops too easily, and a half-inflated one is almost impossible to stomp. Tie one to each ankle with a short string and a little slack, so it bounces around the foot instead of hugging it, and test one yourself before starting.
Mark out a battle zone big enough for your group to move but small enough that players actually meet. For eight players, a space about fifteen feet across works well. For a larger group, go bigger, or split into heats. Everyone starts inside the zone with both pumpkins intact. Spectators stay outside the zone, and that boundary matters, because a player who steps out of the zone to escape is out, just like a player who loses both pumpkins. Set a time limit of three minutes per round so the game does not drag on while two cautious players circle each other forever.
Sort mixed groups by age or size: a kids heat, a teen heat, and an adult heat, with heat winners facing off in a final. A single-age group can go straight to a free-for-all. Write every name on the tracker before the first whistle.
How to Play: Stomp-Only Rules
On the whistle, players try to stomp each other’s ankle balloons. Feet only, that is the whole rule, and it is the rule that saves the game. No grabbing balloons with hands, no pulling strings, no holding another player still while a friend stomps, and no kicking at legs. A stomp means stepping down onto the balloon itself. If a balloon pops on its own, by brushing a sharp shoe or a rough floor, it still counts as lost, which is why good shoes matter. Tell players to wear sneakers, not sandals or dress shoes with buckles.
Each player has two pumpkins, one per ankle. Lose one, and you keep playing on the other. Lose both, and you are out. Step outside the battle zone with both feet, and you are out too, even if your pumpkins are fine. A referee, or a trusted older player, watches for hand grabs and out-of-bounds escapes, and calls players out clearly by name. Arguments slow everything down, so the referee’s call stands. Out players step outside the zone and cheer, which honestly is half the fun once the field narrows to three or four survivors.
The last player with a pumpkin intact wins. If the timer ends with several players left, two pumpkins beats one, and a tie goes to a thirty-second sudden-death round in a smaller zone. Give the winner a prize, and everyone a treat anyway.
Play on grass, a gym floor, or a smooth patio, never gravel. Stop instantly if anyone is hurt or playing too rough, and restart only when everyone is ready.

Variations
The team battle-zone variant is the best version for a big party. Split players into two teams, Orange and Black, and mark two halves of the zone. Players may only stomp the other team’s pumpkins, and the team with the last pumpkin standing wins the round. Play best of three rounds, and switch sides between rounds so nobody blames the slope or the sun. Team play feels less personal than a free-for-all, which helps younger or shyer players join in without feeling targeted.
For younger kids, try pumpkin protectors: partners guard each other’s pumpkins by standing close and blocking, without touching other players. For adults, try the tied-ankle twist, pairing players up with inside ankles tied together and two outside balloons.
Tips and Safety
Wear sneakers, tie laces tight, and clear the battle zone of rocks, sticks, and wet leaves before the first round. Keep balloon strings short so nobody trips, and keep spare balloons and a pump nearby because a few will pop during setup. Watch for latex allergies: if any guest has one, use foil balloons or skip this game and pick another from the party lineup. Stop play at once if a player falls hard, and remind everyone before each round that feet stomp balloons, never legs, and hands stay out of it.
