Halloween Pumpkin Painting Station Printable: 12 Design Cards + Ballot
The No-Carve Station Everyone Can Join
Not everyone wants to carve a pumpkin, and not everyone should: carving tools and small children are a bad combination, and plenty of adults would rather paint than scoop seeds. A pumpkin painting station fixes all of that. Guests pick a pumpkin, pick a design, paint it, and take it home the same night. No knives, no mess beyond washable paint, and no two pumpkins alike.
This page gives you the station sign, twelve design prompt cards written out, the setup, and a judging ballot. Print this page, set out the paint, and open the station.
What You Need
One small pumpkin per guest, plus a few spares
Washable acrylic or tempera paint in orange, black, white, green, purple, and yellow
Foam brushes, small paintbrushes, and cotton swabs for details
Paper plates as palettes and a cup of water per painter
Old shirts, aprons, or trash bags with neck holes as smocks
Newspaper or a plastic cloth for the table
The design prompt cards below, printed or copied onto cards
A drying area, such as a shelf or a row of paper plates
The judging ballot below, if you want a contest
How to Set Up the Station
Cover the table, lay out the pumpkins, and put the paints in the middle so everyone can reach them. Put the design prompt cards in a small basket and let each painter draw one card, or let them pick freely. Place the drying area nearby but not on the same table, because wet pumpkins get bumped. Put a sign at the station that reads: “Paint, don’t carve. Take your pumpkin home tonight.”
For classrooms, pre-sort the paints into small cups so there is no waiting at a shared bottle. For parties, set a soft time limit of 20 minutes per painter so the station keeps moving.
12 Pumpkin Design Prompt Cards
Cut these apart, or let painters read them straight from this page.
1. Classic Jack: a big grin, triangle eyes, and a green stem.
2. Friendly Ghost Pumpkin: paint the whole pumpkin white, then add a ghost face.
3. Galaxy Pumpkin: a dark purple base with white and yellow dots for stars.
4. Monster Face: one big eye, one small eye, and a zigzag mouth.
5. Candy Corn Stripes: horizontal bands of white, orange, and yellow.
6. Spider Web: a black base with white web lines and one small spider.
7. Day of the Dead Style: white base, colorful flowers around the eyes, and a stitched smile.
8. Witch’s Pumpkin: a black hat painted on top and a green face below.
9. Polka Dot Party: a base color of your choice covered in dots of every other color.
10. Haunted House Scene: a black silhouette of a house, a moon, and bats on an orange base.
11. Mummy Pumpkin: white and cream strips wrapped around, with two eyes peeking out.
12. Your Own Design: the best card in the deck, because it is yours.
How to Run It as a Contest
If you want judging, give every guest a ballot and let them vote after all pumpkins are dry. Categories keep it fair: Spookiest, Funniest, Most Colorful, and Best First-Time Painter. Each guest votes once per category, and a pumpkin can win only one category, so the prizes spread around. Announce winners before the party ends so painters can take their pumpkins home proudly.
Pumpkin Painting Judging Ballot
Copy this ballot onto paper, one per guest.
Spookiest pumpkin number: ______
Funniest pumpkin number: ______
Most colorful pumpkin number: ______
Best first-time painter, pumpkin number: ______
Number each pumpkin with a small sticker or a piece of tape as it goes to the drying area, so ballots match pumpkins.
Painting Pumpkins With Guests Who Say They Cannot Paint
Every party has a guest who insists they cannot paint, and the painting station is the perfect place to prove them wrong. Start those guests on the polka dot or candy corn stripe cards, because stripes and dots need no drawing skill at all and always look good. Once they see their striped pumpkin drying next to everyone else’s, most reluctant painters reach for a second pumpkin and try a harder design. Keep a few extra small pumpkins aside just for second attempts, and never judge a first attempt out loud, even kindly, because the fastest way to close a painting station is to make someone feel watched. The station works best when the host paints the ugliest pumpkin of all, early, and laughs about it, which gives everyone else permission to enjoy themselves.
Tips for a Clean Station
Washable paint is not optional with kids, no matter what the bottle promises about the other kind. Keep a roll of paper towels and a bowl of soapy water at the end of the table. Remind painters that thin coats dry faster than thick ones, and that a second coat beats one gloopy coat every time. If a pumpkin gets knocked over, it becomes a “modern art” entry, which is a real category if you say it with confidence.
