Guess the Pumpkin Weight: Free Printable Halloween Game
I love party games that need zero setup, and it doesn’t get simpler than this one. Grab one big pumpkin, a bathroom scale, and a stack of paper — and you’ve got a guessing game that’ll keep guests talking all night. Guess the Pumpkin Weight works at literally any Halloween gathering: kids’ classroom parties, adult costume nights, church fundraisers, office break rooms. Nobody needs rules explained for twenty minutes. Everyone already knows pumpkins are deceptively heavy, and that “hmm, is it 12 or 20 pounds?” debate gets surprisingly competitive.
I’ve run this at three different parties now, and every single time the weigh-in gets a real cheer. Below: how to pick and prep your pumpkin, the full rules, a guess sheet and reveal card you can copy onto paper, tie-breaker rules, prize ideas, and classroom and fundraiser variations.
Why Guess the Pumpkin Weight Works So Well
It’s a one-object game. One pumpkin sits in the middle of the room all party long, and people wander over, pick it up, heft it, argue about it, and scribble a guess. It’s social without being loud, and it fills those awkward first-twenty-minutes-of-the-party gaps perfectly. It also scales: five guests or fifty, the effort is identical.
My favorite part? People are almost always wrong, and delightfully so. In my experience, most guests underestimate medium pumpkins and wildly overestimate the big ones. That surprise is the whole payoff.
How to Pick and Prep Your Pumpkin
The pumpkin is the whole game, so pick a good one.
- Go big, but not absurd. A pumpkin in the 15–30 pound range is the sweet spot. Anything under 10 pounds feels too guessable; anything over 40 gets unwieldy to lift and haul.
- Choose an odd shape. Lumpy, tall, wide-but-hollow-looking pumpkins mess with people’s instincts, which makes guessing harder and funnier.
- Keep the sticker on — or weigh it privately. This is the one rule that matters most: nobody can know the real weight. If your pumpkin has a grocery store weight sticker, peel it off. Weigh the pumpkin at home on a bathroom scale before the party, write the number down somewhere safe (your phone’s notes app works), and then don’t tell a soul — not your co-host, not your best friend. One leaked answer ruins the game.
- Put it somewhere visible and liftable. A side table near the entrance works great. Add a small sign: “Guess the Weight! One guess per person — winner announced at [time].” Taping a bowl of pencils and your guess slips next to it keeps everything self-serve.

The Rules
Here’s the full ruleset, ready to read aloud or print on a card next to the pumpkin:
- One guess per person. Write your name and your guess (in pounds) on a slip and drop it in the jar or box.
- Lifting is allowed. Guests may pick up and heft the pumpkin — but no scales, no phones-with-scale-apps, no sneaky weighing tricks.
- Guesses close at a set time. Pick a deadline (say, 9:00 PM or an hour before the party ends) and announce it. No late slips.
- Closest guess wins. After the deadline, weigh the pumpkin in front of everyone — the dramatic weigh-in is half the fun — and compare. The closest guess, over or under, takes the prize.
- Ties are broken by an early-bird rule. If two guesses are equally close, the earlier guess wins. (Mark each slip with the time it’s dropped in, or just note the order.)
The Printable Guess Sheet
Copy this onto paper and cut into slips — or use it as a shared sign-up sheet:
Guess the Pumpkin Weight — Entry Slips
| Name | My Guess (lbs) | Time In |
|---|---|---|
The Reveal Card
When the guessing closes, it’s showtime. Print or write out this card and read it dramatically before the weigh-in:
THE BIG REVEAL
The guesses are in! Our pumpkin has been lifted, hefted, and debated all evening.
Guesses ranged from _____ lbs to _____ lbs.
And the actual weight is… _____ lbs!
Congratulations to our winner: __________________
Tip: build the suspense. Read the three closest guesses aloud first, then reveal the number. You’ll get gasps — guaranteed.
Tie-Breaker Rules
Ties happen more often than you’d think, especially with round-number guesses. Settle it cleanly:
- Earliest slip wins. That’s why the “Time In” column exists. Simplest and fairest.
- Backup: closest without going over. If you’d rather run it game-show style, the closest guess that doesn’t exceed the real weight wins. Announce your chosen rule up front so nobody argues later.
- Split the prize. For casual parties, honestly, just declare co-winners and split the candy. Nobody’s mad about that.
Prize Ideas
The prize doesn’t need to be big — the glory is the point. That said, a little something sweetens the deal:
- The pumpkin itself (classic — the winner takes it home for carving)
- A bag of Halloween candy or a king-size candy bar
- A small pumpkin-spice candle or a fall-scented goodie
- A $5 coffee shop gift card for office parties
- A “Pumpkin Champion” paper crown — costs nothing, gets worn all night

Classroom Variation
Teachers, this one’s a stealth math lesson. Have students estimate first, then guide them: let them lift the pumpkin, compare it against known weights (a gallon of milk is about 8.5 pounds — a great reference point), and revise their guesses before writing them down. Record every guess on the board, then weigh the pumpkin together as a class. You’ve just taught estimation, and the kids won’t even notice. For younger grades, skip exact pounds and use “heavier or lighter than” comparisons with classroom objects.
Fundraiser Variation
This game is a quiet fundraising superstar. Charge $1–$2 per guess at fall festivals, church events, or school fundraisers — a big visible pumpkin with a “Guess the Weight — $1 a guess!” sign practically sells itself. One organizer I know ran it at a school fall fair and the pumpkin paid for itself many times over. Keep a running tally of entries, announce the weigh-in time over the PA or on a poster, and let the winner take the pumpkin home. All you need is the pumpkin, a scale, slips, and a jar for the cash.
Hosting Tips for the Best Weigh-In Moment
- Announce the game early. Mention it in the invitation or when guests arrive so everyone gets a guess in before the deadline.
- Set a firm cutoff time and stick to it — announce “last guesses in 10 minutes” for a final rush.
- Make the weigh-in an event. Gather everyone, read the funniest guesses aloud, then weigh the pumpkin where all can see. A kitchen scale works for small pumpkins; a bathroom scale for the big ones (weigh yourself holding it, then subtract — or just place it directly).
- Reuse the game. Running a multi-day event? Swap in a new pumpkin each day and keep a leaderboard.
