1. Halloween Trivia Lightning Round
Fast, loud, perfect for warming up the room.
Players: 4 or more, in teams or free-for-all. Materials: This printed page, a pen for keeping score.
- What candy was originally called “Chicken Feed”? Answer: Candy corn
- Which vegetable did Irish immigrants use for jack-o’-lanterns before pumpkins? Answer: Turnips
- What ancient Celtic festival is considered the ancestor of Halloween? Answer: Samhain
- In the classic tale, a headless horseman chases a schoolteacher — what town does he haunt? Answer: Sleepy Hollow
- What color was the first plastic trick-or-treat pumpkin bucket sold by a major toy company? Answer: Orange
- Which US state is famous for the Salem witch trials? Answer: Massachusetts
- What do you call a group of witches? Answer: A coven
- Which candy bar’s name comes from a horse owned by the Mars family? Answer: Snickers
- In the movie Ghostbusters, what color is the slime-covered ghost named Slimer? Answer: Green
- What phobia is the fear of Halloween? Answer: Samhainophobia
How to play: The host reads all ten questions. Award one point per correct answer. Tied at the end? Use this tiebreaker: “Halloween has never been an official US holiday — true or false?” (True wins!)
2. Would You Rather: Halloween Icebreaker
Every guest answers aloud — no wrong answers, but the arguments are half the fun.
- Would you rather sleep one night in a haunted house or walk through a corn maze at midnight alone?
- Would you rather have a black cat follow you everywhere or hear a crow caw every time you tell a secret?
- Would you rather only ever eat candy corn or only ever eat caramel apples?
- Would you rather wear your costume for an entire year or never be allowed to dress up again?
- Would you rather find a spider in your shoe or a bat in your attic?
- Would you rather carve a pumpkin with a spoon or bob for apples wearing gloves?
- Would you rather live in a castle full of bats or a cottage next to a graveyard?
- Would you rather have glowing orange eyes or fangs that never go away?
- Would you rather star in a zombie movie or direct a haunted house tour?
- Would you rather skip trick-or-treating for a year or give away all your candy?
How to play: Go around the circle — each person answers with one reason. The funniest answer wins the round.
3. Pictionary Quick List
One drawer, everyone else guesses. Players: 4+. Materials: Paper, a marker, this word list.
How to play: The host whispers a word to the drawer, who gets 60 seconds — no letters, no numbers, no talking. Each correct guess earns both the drawer and the guesser a point.
- Witch’s broomstick
- Jack-o’-lantern
- Mummy unraveling
- Ghost with glasses
- Spiderweb in a corner
- Trick-or-treat bucket
- Haunted rollercoaster
- Frankenstein’s boots
- Candy apple
- Werewolf howling at the moon
- Vampire cape
- Skeleton dancing
4. The Candy Dice Game
Players: 3 or more. Materials: One die, a bowl of wrapped candy. How to play: Roll and follow the rule:
- Roll 1: Take one candy from the bowl.
- Roll 2: Take two candies from the bowl.
- Roll 3: Take one candy from the player on your left.
- Roll 4: Take one candy from the player on your right.
- Roll 5: Give one of your candies to the bowl.
- Roll 6: Everyone passes one candy to the left!
Play until the bowl is empty; whoever has the most candy wins — and keeps the stash.
5. Guess the Candy Count
The classic jar game, zero prep beyond a jar. Players: Any number. Materials: A clear jar filled with candy corn, slips of paper, a pen.
How to play: Guests write their name and guess on a slip and drop it in a bowl when they arrive. Reveal the count at the end of the night — closest guess wins a prize. Let guests handle the jar so they can eyeball it; no shaking it open!
6. Wrap the Mummy
Teams race to turn one member into a mummy with toilet paper. Players: 6 or more, in teams of 3–4. Materials: Two rolls of toilet paper per team.
How to play: Each team picks a mummy who stands still, arms slightly out. On “go,” teams wrap their mummy head to toe. The first team to use up both rolls wins — but the paper must stay on for a 10-second victory pose. Torn paper is fine; keep wrapping!

7. Halloween Charades Mini
Act it out, no sounds, no spelling letters in the air. Players: 4 or more. Materials: This prompt list.
How to play: Players take turns drawing a prompt and acting it out silently. 60 seconds per turn. One point per correct guess.
- Stirring a witch’s cauldron
- A vampire opening a cape
- Carving a pumpkin
- Being scared by your own reflection
- A zombie walking through a graveyard
- Bobbing for apples
- A ghost floating through a wall
- A spider dropping from the ceiling
- A werewolf transforming under the moon
- A black cat arching its back
8. Pumpkin Pong
Like beer pong, but family-friendly — bounce ping pong balls into mini pumpkins. Players: 2 or more. Materials: 6 small hollowed pumpkins or plastic pumpkin buckets, 6 ping pong balls.
How to play: Line up the pumpkins in a triangle, two feet from the table’s edge. Players take turns bouncing a ball, trying to land it in a pumpkin. Each successful toss earns a point; first to 5 wins. For a harder game, move the throwing line back a foot each round.
9. Costume Ballot Vote
End the night with an official costume awards ceremony. Players: Everyone. Materials: Slips of paper, a pen, a hat or bowl for ballots.
How to play: Hand out one ballot per guest listing four categories: Scariest, Funniest, Most Creative, Best Couple or Group. One name per category, no voting for yourself! Count the votes, announce the winners dramatically, and hand out small prizes.
How to Print This Page
- Print double-sided to fit everything on two sheets — easier to pass around the room.
- Use “fit to page” in your printer dialog so the lists don’t get cut off.
- Print one extra copy for the host to read questions from, so players can’t peek at the answers.
- Tape a sticky note with the dice rules to the candy bowl so guests can play without asking.
