Halloween Word Scramble Printable: 24 Spooky Words (Free to Print)

A word scramble is one of those rare party games that works at literally any Halloween gathering. I’ve used it at kids’ classroom parties, adult dinner nights, and office break-room setups, and it never flops. No supplies, no prep, no shouting — just a sheet of paper and a few minutes of brain-scratching. The full game is written out below, scrambled words first and the answer key at the bottom, so this page is your free printable: print it, cut off the answer key if you want, and you’re done.

Twenty-four words total, split into an easy round and a tricky round. Hand both to adults, just the easy round to younger kids. My own rule of thumb: the easy round takes about seven minutes, the tricky round takes about ten, and nobody’s ever bored by the end.

How to Play

  • Print one sheet per player (or per team) plus one copy of the answer key for yourself.
  • Give players 7 minutes for the easy round and 10 minutes for the tricky round.
  • Scoring: 1 point per unscrambled word. First to finish with all correct earns 3 bonus points.
  • Team version: split the group into teams of 3–4 and let them work together — much better for mixed-age crowds.

If you’re hosting and want the polished version instead, our Halloween Word Scramble Pack on Etsy comes as designed worksheets with styled fonts and a matching answer key — but everything you need to play free is right here on this page.

Turn It Into a Party Tournament

Playing both rounds straight through is great, but if your crowd is competitive, bracket it. Split guests into teams of two and run a head-to-head bracket: Round 1 (easy) decides the seeding, Round 2 (tricky) decides who advances. Give each matchup 5 minutes, then the top two teams face off in a sudden-death round — you read scrambled words aloud, first team to shout the correct answer takes the point, best of seven wins. I’ve seen quiet dinner parties turn gloriously loud over sudden-death unscrambling. All you need is one printed copy of the list for yourself and a timer on your phone.

Three Ways to Make It Harder

If your group breezes through both rounds, don’t let the energy drop. Try these:

  • Blank answers: players must write the unscrambled word from memory with no word bank — exactly how it’s printed here.
  • Timed sprints: read the scrambled words aloud one at a time. First hand up with the correct answer gets the point. It gets loud.
  • Speed relay: teams line up; one player runs up, unscrambles one word, tags the next. The relay chaos is half the fun.

Host Tips That Save You Trouble

  • Print the answer key on a separate page and keep it with you. Someone always peeks.
  • Pencils, not pens — players like to erase and retry. Golf pencils work great and they’re cheap.
  • Kid-friendly cut: for under-7s, drop Round 2 and read Round 1 aloud as a group activity instead.
  • Prize idea: winner picks first from the candy bowl. Second place picks second. It’s cheap and it works.
